It’s been a wild ride – Lessons learned as I began a marketing business in 2023

When you start a new business, you have hopes and dreams and a plan…but you don’t really know what kind of business you’ll be until it gets real.

Putting in all of the practice time in the hopes that “game-time” happens sooner than later. To me, that is what my career path has been up to this point. It’s been 20 years of training and learning the digital marketing landscape to now take it upon myself to help small businesses, realtors, and entrepreneurs grow their presence online.

Back to school with Owls

At the end of 2022, my wife hands me a brochure from her alma mater Florida Atlantic University. She opened up to an advertisement for a Digital Marketing Certification course that looked very appealing. But of course, there’s a price tag of a couple thousand dollars that didn’t seem ideal for our family’s current situation.

Then the light bulb went off.

“You have to spend money to make money” was the cliche that was going over and over in my head. Spend the money now and get caught up to speed on the current Digital Marketing trends to ultimately apply them to a client base which grows over time.

This is the best decision that I have made in a LONG TIME!

Lessons learned to kickstart the business

In recent years, there has been a tremendous transformation in the world of social media. Meta (Facebook and Instagram) has been constantly evolving its algorithms, embracing new strategies to stay competitive with TikTok. Initially, there was a strong focus on video content across the Meta platforms, as they aimed to outshine TikTok. However, over time, Meta recognized the strength of TikTok and its impact on the social media landscape. Rather than trying to acquire TikTok or eliminate its influence, Meta has chosen a path of acceptance, coexistence, and continuous improvement. This shift in perspective has brought about exciting opportunities for users to explore and engage with diverse content.

Social media holds great potential for everyone, even those who may not prioritize it. Let’s explore the vast impact of Meta, the 8th largest company globally, on our culture. Embracing this ever-evolving landscape can be invigorating, provided you approach it with an open mind. By staying informed, you can effortlessly navigate the waves of change without stumbling.

It’s not just about being clever, funny or grabbing attention

Nowadays, a lot of people look at social media content to wind down or see something eye-catching. But you’ll always get people who want to consume content and know everything about anything. Allow them to learn something new and cool. Allow them to take a deep dive into your business. Gathering email addresses and starting an email newsletter is a great idea. Learn more here!

Should you post on Facebook anymore?

“Unless your customer is over 50, you probably won’t get much engagement there. But there is no harm in posting on it”

This has stuck with me since being told this at the beginning of 2023. In my opinion, the best part about Facebook is their Event Pages. If your business can somehow figure out planning an event (I can help – read this blog), this is a viral connection to people who see on their feed what cool things people are doing. Those stories on Facebook are useless.
